Your tooth consists of a hard outer layer of dental enamel, a layer beneath it called dentin, and soft tissue under the dentin called pulp. The pulp in your tooth contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue – everything it needs to stay strong and healthy.
If the pulp becomes infected, we’ll need to perform a root canal. A tooth may become infected as a result of severe decay, periodontal disease, a crack or chip in the tooth, or a crown that fails.
The decision to have a root canal will be made by one of our doctors after a thorough evaluation. The process involves gently clearing away any damaged tissue, then carefully cleansing and sealing the tooth.
We may recommend a simple filling to protect your tooth after a root canal, but in most cases, a dental crown will be needed to provide the ultimate in strength and protection for a compromised tooth.
